Unlike the United States who has the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program, Canada has never experienced the type of earthquake like Northridge, Loma Prieta, and San Francisco. However, individual Canadian agencies are now actively involved in earthquake research and in planning for natural disaster. Hopefully there will never be the expected megathrust earthquake, but as long as people settle in the hazard prone area, the risk of a major catastrophe will be present.
