For about 155 years, dramatic social and legal changes have been accomplished that are now very accepted. The staggering changes for women that have come about over these 155 years, in family life, in religion, in government, in employment, in education did not just happen spontaneously. Women themselves made these changes happen, very deliberately. Women have not been the passive recipients of miraculous changes in laws and human nature. Women have come together to affect these changes:

have entered the professions, the trades, and businesses of every kind. Women have opened the ranks of the clergy, the military, and the newsroom. More than three million women now work in occupations considered "nontraditional" until very recently. Women have accomplished so much during the 155 years, yet a lot still remains to be done. Substantial barriers to the full equality of America's women still remain before their freedom as a Nation can be called complete.
