William Tecumseh Sherman was born in Ohio on February 8, 1820 to Charles R. Sherman and Mary Hoyt Sherman. He was the sixth of ten children.

Soon his asthma would again flare up further weakening him. On February 14, at 1:50 P.M. Sherman passed away. Those with him were his children Cumpy, Minnie, Elly, Lizzie, and Rachel. Generals Slocum and Howard waited in a room outside. Sherman's family was Catholic, but he himself expressed no belief in God.
