Their journey is now called the Trail of Tears because of the great suffering they experienced along the way. Approximately 2000 Cherokee Indians died along the route. Before European settlers landed in North America there were about 10 million native Americans. Within the next 300 years, 90% of them were wiped out by disease, hunger, and wars.
