Thurgood Leader
Thurgood Marshall is a famous African-American lawyer who fought for our
civil rights. He is a hero to African Americans and may be an outlaw to
others. He was born July 2, 1908 in Baltimore Maryland. His parents are
William and Norma Marshall. In 1909 when Thurgood was a baby the family
lived in New York, but when he was 6 years old the family moved back to
Baltimore.

Thurgood was still working for the NAACP and in 1946 was given the Spingarn Medal of honor. One day he got a call from the president. The president wanted Thurgood to join the court. In 1967 he became the first African-American appointed to the Supreme court. Justice Marshall retired in 1991 from his work and died January 24, 1993 at 84.
