Nippenose Valley Observations The summit of north White Deer Ridge on route forty four allows for a view of the Nippenose valley below. From this elevation one is able to get a clear look at the sandstone that marks the ridge, as well as the limestone of the valley itself. Of the two rocks, it is probable that the sandstone would be more resistant to weathering, due to its elevation in the ridge and composition.

formation is an example of black shale. Unlike the previous rocks, this formation in siliciclastic because it responds to acid. It is a darker gray than previously seen, with beds that are planer and very thin to medium laminate in thickness. There is also cross bedding, which suggests that the depositional environment was one with moving water. It should also be noted that the formation significantly tilted, at roughly a twenty-five to thirty degree angle.
