In 1948 Erich Maria Remarque settled in Switzerland and was never invited to return from the emigration in Germany. On September 25, 1970 in Locarno, Erich Maria Remarque died. Although Remarque's later writings, focusing on the collapse of the old European world and values from 1914 through the cold war, did not receive the same critical acclaim as his first novel did, his skill to create interesting characters and making realistic sentimental scenes made him a great popular writer.
