this story that she is trying to convince us of John's wrong-doings. But alas we can only see it from the narrators point of view so we have no other option but to trust her. The minor character's in this story are very important in making subtle and unapparent changes. If John was more of a main character then his actions would have been more obvious in the story making it less gripping and suspending.
