Only a century ago mankind thought that they would never leave the face of the earth. Were they ever mistaken! On the first of July 1957, all the world's forces joined hands to study the Earth from all its sides.
Walter Sullivan, a veteran science reporter, received a phone call from Times headquarters saying that the Soviets had successfully launched a "Sputnik". The Russian name for satellite, Sputnik, became the name for the first space program.
