Embarrassingly these trade unions grew quickly and the USSR took action to destroy them. From 1950's to 1980's, the USSR took action to maintain their position and influence politically, economically and militarily. It was rather successful because orders were restored even though hundreds of thousands people were killed, but it took 12 years from the Hungarian to Czechoslovakian uprising, which couldn't be a threat to the USSR. Therefore, the USSR was successful in maintaining its control.
