When Germany built up its army, the other strong powers had to expand theirs as well to keep the balance of power. Everyone thought World War I would be an easy, quick war, so they went into war without as much thought. What really happened was a long, four year, disastrous war. So, when the Black Hand assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, for gaining land that was thought to be Serbian, the war began.
