Chillingworth becomes fiendish, sinning through hate and non-belief. He suffers through his obsession with torturing Dimmesdale, dying shortly after Dimmesdale to the futility of his life. Through their repentance, or lack thereof, the characters present the message that although you will sin, you can redeem yourself if you take the opportunity.
