Under the terms of an international convention signed in 1888, the canal was opened to the vessels of all nations without discrimination, in peace and in war. However, Britain considered the canal vital to the maintenance of its maritime power and colonial interests. <Tab/>Many countries could have used the canal to their advantage, and many did.
