They both shared the same qualities...they loved animals...and the man was trying to rid himself of these similarities by mutilating the cat, to prove himself as the other. I am suggesting that both readings are correct. Poe's stories are full of pyschoanalytical content, and there is no one true reading. There are probably a myriad of other readings available as well...but these are all I covered.
