Spartacus was born in Thrace (which is now in modern day Greece) in the first century BC as a freeborn provincial. He served as an auxiliary in the Roman Army in Macedonia where he then deserted the army and was outlawed, captured and sold into slavery. He was then purchased by Lentulus Batiatus and trained at a gladiatorial college in Capua.

Spartacus may not have succeeded at the time, he inspired the hopes of Roman slaves, and many flocked to him as they fought many winning battles in their quest for freedom. Through his actions and heroism he continued to provide inspiration to the oppressed peoples in their struggles to obtain freedom and has become a symbol for many revolutionary movements. In addition to this very day he has inspired great works of literature and film.
