Many people live their lives with only illusions of creativity; Sonny is a prime example of how various things can keep a person from ever achieving their dreams. Baldwin shows us how people can spend their entire life grasping for an illusion in the story "Sonny's Blues." The world is full of "traps" and "detours" that lead people away from their full potential. Drugs, mostly heroin, is one of the traps that Sonny falls into.
