Most certainly all the tension between religion and science helped in the sudden boom, but would these incredible discoveries have occurred without the influence of science in the beginning? Of course they would have. It might not have been as sudden, but rather more gradual and predictable, but science most certainly would have developed into what it is today at some point or another.
