Sallie was taken by the soldiers, nursed back to health, and informally adopted by some of the men as the regiment's mascot. Apparently she became a favorite of most of the 11th Pennsylvania's soldiers and remained so until she was killed at the Battle of Hatcher's Run, Virginia in 1864.
