Have you ever seen on of the popular bumper stickers that proudly proclaim, "My child is an honor student at such and such school", or the responding sticker that says, "My kid beat up your honor student?" The underlying assumption seems to be that everyone can be an Olympic athlete, but the way to science and doctorates is only reserved for the lucky few. Ironically, the truth is much the opposite: while the chances of making it in professional sports are almost nil, a country with a giant system of public education and some of the best schools in the world can give the gift of intellectual pursuit to millions of people.
