On the surface it seems that David paints a noble picture of his brother Jack and tries to use him in contrast with his own failings. In conclusion it is not that David is trying to damn the qualities that Jack has but rather is confused about them and his reasoning for questioning them is because he regards these qualities as a part of his past he would rather forget.
