Our common perception of cinema, and more importantly, good movies, is that it is a reflection of reality. What movies which we find so amazing, and garner tons of money at the box office do so well is that such films immerse us, the viewers in the experience of watching the movie. Movies like this make us feel as if we are actually part of the story, and that we are there with the characters.

end. If only the plot were to be taken into consideration, then I guess one could say that Adaptation as a film followed convention. Only it did not. Charlie Kaufman wanted to show that no matter how hard you try to stay out of convention in Hollywood, you are forced to write what the people(the movie-goers) want, and that is, ironically, a conventional Hollywood blockbuster film. This is why for me, Adaptation is metafictional.
