To be married to a certain individual shows a commitment to that individual and moreover, complete devotion to the individual. It also signifies that all feelings toward that person have to be solely for them and not for anyone else. A strong emotional attachment must be present between the two individuals. These are the two main features, among many other smaller, trivial ones, in maintaining a successful marriage.
