Mankind's attraction to violence is a trait inherited from our ancestors the cave dwellers. Their life was lived in a primal kill or be killed society. The books Night written by Elie Wiesel and Hiroshima written by John Hersey bring this attitude into our common era. Both books depict how in a blink of an eye human nature can change, and turn violent.

Hitler basically forced the Germans into beating, killing and other brutal behavior on the people he believed were not special. Some of the treatment they received were, they were starved, badly beaten, tortured in ways like hard physical labor, and even being murdered.
