first glance, Lord of the Flies, seems to be only a story of adventure and action. However, by taking into account the various uses of symbolism, the true theme of the novel is revealed. Golding is providing a commentary on the true nature of man. It is suggested that the nature of man, not the threat of atomic warfare or other outside forces, will lead to the ultimate destruction of civilization, as we know it.
