Throughout the depression, money was, obviously, low, and people needed ways to entertain themselves. In these times of need, people looked to an old friend, capable of hours of entertainment for a very low price. This friend was the book. This essay is essentially meant to be about literature and other hobbies during the depression, but after extensive research I have come to par with the fact that literature was such an overbearing part of 1930

because authors that otherwise would have remained silent spoke up and was heard. Many people refer to the depression as a tragedy, but to someone who truly enjoys and studies the books of the time period, the term acceptable loss is among the first to come to mind. Perhaps in the future we will see authors who can rival those of the great depression, but as of now those authors are far and few between.
