…even more importantly, these festivals and rituals all had their proper place in life, not overlapping very much with the ordinary events of everyday life. In this sense, then, I think it is safe to say that the Athenians fit my mold of a people not overly interested in luxury and gratification, and it is partly as a result of this, I suggest, that the Athenians--and the Greeks in general--were so successful as a culture.
