In Act Two of King Lear we see Lear's emotional deterioration. In a very short time Lear progresses from denial to rage to isolation. The audience can see this in Lear's language; when he is in denial he speaks formally to Regan hoping what he has heard is wrong. Regan denies him of her love and Lear is exposed to the harsh reality that she disrespected him by stocking his messenger and having a secret alliance with Goneril. Goneril's appearance moves Lear from denial into defense where he begins his rage. Everything is clear to him now and he cannot deny the truth any longer. Lear leaves them and goes out into the storm daughterless.
