Johnson and his third wife divorced in 1924, Johnson returned to boxing. After being free from prison Johnson survived five car accidents. On June 10, 1946 Johnson was driving on highway one near Raleigh, North Carolina when he crashed into a light pole. Johnson died three hours later.
