It can be proved to some extent that sociology is a product of modernity and modern society demands as the first schools of sociology opened within the modern world as the discipline became recognised because of rational thought. However I do believe some aspects of sociology occurred before the enlightenment there was just no person or technology there to conduct studies, after all sociology requires scientific thought itself.
