Julius II deciding it was time for a new church to be built. By the time the project was completed, nearly 10 architects had assisted in its completion. Architects such as Donato Bramante, Michelangleo, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini headed the project. Bramante was the original architect and designed the structure as a combination of a square, circular and Greek cross forms. Michelangelo designed the ribbed dome shape as a Renaissance version of earlier Gothic style domes.
