…seem to use darkness, dark places and shadows to create atmosphere. They also all contrast old superstitions with new, progressive or rational ideas. Because of the extreme importance of class during the nineteenth century, the ideas of class are evident in all of the stories. I think that Dickens' "The Signal-Man" uses setting most effectively, because it ties the whole story together, aswell as creating a very peculiar location and an interesting metaphor of class.
