As each character is presented in the play, all appear to be generous making it a difficult task for Hamlet to uncover the hidden truth about the nature of each character. As Marcellus says, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark." (I, iv, 99) That being the lies which have replaced and covered the truth in each character.
