How far would one person go to make the truth be known? If you know that you are innocent of an accusation, do you have to tell all you know? Guy de Maupassant's character, Hauchcome, in "A Piece of String", is the type of character who needs everybody to agree with him to validate his opinion. Because of his need to be validated by others, Hauchcome makes his situation worse.

All in all, I just would've handled things differently than Hauchcome. Irony always has a lesson to teach. Hauchcome pretended to look for a dropped item so as not to appear undignified; as a result, he is accused of thievery which undignified his reputation anyways by claiming his innocence further after it is already proven. Just by reacting to his situation a little differently, he could've proven his innocence more subtly and regained his dignity.
