Over the years, the issue of slavery had always been closely associated with the issue of racial prejudice. However, there have been wide dispute among historians about whether or not the racism and discrimination of African Americans were a precursor to their enslavement. Thus, it would seem that slavery in the English colonies was the result of, and not the cause of, years of discrimination against the Negroes. The absence of laws providing a status for blacks made it possible for the white society to impose almost any kind of status onto the Africans, one that inevitably mirrored and strengthened that discrimination.
