First, the imported fire ant has a very high reproductive potential; producing many hundreds of new queens each summer. Second, new queens spread by flying and thus can "drop into" any area. Third, fire ants are very competitive and once established they eliminate most other competing ants and other invertebrate predators. Their love for turned up land makes Florida, with its constant growth and construction, a preferable habitat for the growing population of fire ants.
