Throughout the story, the mother's view of her two daughters beauty changed from shallow to deep. Although Dee had a beautiful outward appearance, inside she couldn't hold a candle to that of Maggie's. Even though Maggie had a scarred outer appearance, her inside beauty made herself as a whole, beautiful.
