Emily Dickinson was born in 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts into a lower middle class family with an older brother and sister. Emily obeyed her father, but did what she thought was right for herself. If her parents told her not to go in the woods, or she might get flower poisoning or a snake bite, she responded by saying all she ever met were "angels."
