Also, the felt coasters were under the beads to prevent the table from getting wet, but at the end of the story, the coasters were damp and the tables wet, another example of failed protection. I don't necessarily agree with this theory and think it is merely coincidence, but as it says in a page in our assignments, "skillful writers such as Hemingway do nothing accidentally!"
