The great author Charlotte Perkins Gilman was born in Hartford, Connecticut, whom was the daughter of both Mary Westcott Perkins and Frederick Beecher Perkins. Gilman had a hard life; her father left the family after his child died in 1866. Mary Perkins, Gilman's mother lived alone with her children on the edge of poverty. She was often forced to move from relative to relative or to different temporary housing.
