…democracy. William Golding cleverly uses the conch as an extended metaphor. It represents the authority of which the boys are so used to obeying. The conch symbolizes the law and order on the island. This book was enjoyable because it showed how cruel and barbaric people (even children) can be. It showed what can happen when people give into their fears. It also had great descriptions of the children and the island in this book.
