Personally I am not very intent or motivated on black and white films; but Carlton's production of "Great Expectations" digitally remastered on DVD took me by surprise. David Lean (director) did a fantastic Job. The use of music and fade edits to show emotion and time pass really astonished me- I thought it was pretty rare for a film produced in the 40's to use such advanced technology and special effects. were a popular form of graffiti; a man with a big nose) But I thought that the main problem was the lighting, when the light to night scenes change (fade) you cannot really tell because it is all in dull black and white. On the whole I would definitely recommend this film. I think it would be great for Friday evenings with a whole load of popcorn. Well it certainly did the job for me.
