The setting of this play takes place in Venice. In beginning of the play Iago, a soldier under Othello's command, is arguing with Roderigo, a wealthy Venetian. Roderigo paid Iago a large sum of money to spy on Othello for him. Roderigo wants to take Othello's girlfriend/wife, Desdemona, as his own. Roderigo thinks that Iago has not been telling him enough about Desdemona and that Iago's loyalty is to Othello not him. Iago

Emilia and Desdemona talk about Othello. Emilia believes that someone else has twisted Othello to believe lies about Desdemona. Everyone leaves to go to dinner except Iago. Roderigo meets with Iago. Roderigo still believes that Iago is not really trying to help win Desdemona for him. He questions all of the money and jewels that he has sent to Desdemona. Iago tells him that they must kill Cassio. They work out all of the details.
